From punk rock and jazz to hip-hop and video game soundtracks, Effessgee fashions a dark and cinematic atmosphere inspired by the many genres he has worked in, creating a uniquely distorted and rhythmic sound. He bases his style on his belief that aggressive music can bond people together through the mutual release of energy and emotional expression.
Growing up in the Bay Area, bands like Green Day, Led Zepplin, and Weezer, inspired Effessgee with the heavy rhythms of rock and roll and solidified his first instrument of choice: drums. Self-taught for most of his life, he has always favored playing and learning music by ear. This attitude of do-it-yourself creativity is what gives his music an authentic and unique sound.
After graduating from high school Effessgee made the move to Oregon where he began studying audio engineering at Lane Community College, where he dived deeper into the world of hip-hop and electronic music. Being in a new city, he primarily worked on solo music, blending the genre of hip-hop with others like punk and jazz, and drawing inspiration from artists like Playboi Carti, whose album Whole Lotta Red was released soon after Effessgee’s move to Oregon. He continued to work with bands throughout this time to pursue his love for drumming but focused on hip-hop and electronic music as his main form of artistic expression.
Moving up to Portland to continue his studies, he began collaborating with other artists in the hip-hop scene. His current project sees him collaborating with rapper Rilke, who, after hearing one beat he asked Effessgee to remix said, “If you keep sending me [beats] like this, we’re gonna go far.” Effessgee currently lives in Portland where he writes from his home studio and works doing freelance engineering on the side. He continues to push the boundaries of the hip-hop genre, drawing from his childhood inspirations and collaboration with other artists.
